Honduras, Cuba and Haiti are the countries with the most migrants seeking refuge in Mexico

Between January and July 2024, it was observed that Hondurans, Cubans and Haitians account for the majority of asylum applications in Mexico. Together they represent 72% of all asylum requests.

The migration crisis due to violence and poverty in Latin America has generated the largest flows of people seeking asylum; most seek to reach the United States, but many others find in Mexico an option to have a better life.

Between January and July 2024, 46,920 asylum applications have been registered in Mexico, according to figures from Comar (Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid).

Although this level implied a drop of 46.9% compared to the same period last year, it still remains at high levels.

Honduras, Cuba and Haiti are the main countries of origin of migrants seeking asylum in Mexico: 7 out of 10 (72%) have one of these nationalities.

This is in line with the high levels of insecurity, instability and economic, social and political crisis that these countries present.

Other nationalities of the applicants are: El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Chile.
