For the first time since the current migrant caravan crossing Oaxacan territory entered the state on August 6, a brigade of personnel from the Oaxaca Health Services (SSO) went to attend to women and minors who arrived on foot to the city of Juchitán.

Since yesterday afternoon, at least 2 thousand migrants who make up this caravan called “Jesus Christ” arrived at the site where last January the government of Oaxaca closed the so-called Migratory Mobility Center (CMM), and at noon on Tuesday they were attended to on site by the SSO brigades whose personnel provided them with medicines for ailments such as diarrhea, fevers, body aches and sore feet.

The immigration authorities reported that the migrants will rest tonight in the city of Juchitán, and once they have recovered they will resume the walk on the Pan-American Highway 190, towards the capital of Oaxaca, in their plans to advance to the north of the country. Exhausted, the migrants trust that they will have the authorization of the Mexican government to cross the country.

“We do not want to stay in Mexico, our dream is in the United States, that is why we ask the new President (Claudia Sheinbaum), to allow us to walk to the north of the country,” they said as some set up their tents and others with their cardboard on the floor to rest before resuming the walk.

For its part, the government of Oaxaca reported that it is providing support to two thousand people who have walked in the territory of the municipalities of San Pedro Tapanatepec, Santiago Niltepec and La Ventosa, and assured that “the greatest concern” is for the girls, boys and adolescents who are part of the caravan, emphasized the secretary of government, Jesús Romero López.

Migrants waiting to know their route to the US

According to official data, the caravan has grown to 2,485 people. The Secretariat of Government (Sego) of the government of Oaxaca details that of these people, 1,380 are men, 625 are women and 426 are minors.

The information from the Sego indicates that the migrants have walked 141 kilometers, and are still waiting to know which route they will take to continue their journey to the north of the country with the intention of crossing the border to the United States in search of better living conditions.

The probable routes are towards Matías Romero Avendaño and from there towards the state of Veracruz; federal highway 200 towards the Costa de Oaxaca region, or highway 190 towards the Valles Centrales region and the state capital.

It also mentions that 88 people have required medical attention, dressings and injections, 37 people have required medication and 111 people, food, water and serums.
