In Oaxaca, residents of the municipality of Magdalena Apasco decided to imprison the mayor and his councilors, after failing to account for the city council’s budget to the residents.
Since Sunday, June 11, councilor Virgilio Pérez Santiago and ten other members of his council remained detained in the cells of the town’s municipal palace, until the residents determined the crimes of which they were accused.

According to the dissatisfied citizens, the councilor and his council are accused of alleged misappropriation of resources for more than 18 million pesos, since since they took office they have not accounted for the management of the budget; in addition to the fact that the money was distributed among the members of the city council.
Among those accused are the mayor of Magdalena Apasco, Virgilio Pérez Santiago, a trustee, the councilor for Finance, the councilor for Education, the councilor for Health, the police councilor, and the comptroller, who is in charge of evaluating the public spending of the municipality.
What are the inhabitants of the municipality of Magdalena Apasco asking for?
After the arrest of the people involved in the alleged misappropriation of resources was made known, the inhabitants of the Oaxacan municipality asked the state authorities to start an audit against the mayor and his council to clarify the accounts.
The community assembly assured that money was never allocated for the agencies and colonies of the municipality, so they do not plan to release the trustees until the money is delivered and the pertinent investigations begin. Meanwhile, the inhabitants named a new municipal Council and Comptroller to verify the expenses of the town.
On the other hand, it was announced that four of the councilors suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure, for which they require their medications; despite the fact that they have asked for help from the authorities of Oaxaca, so far no authority has appeared in Magdalena Apasco to negotiate with the residents.
