During the July and August holidays, cases of Covid-19 have remained in Jalisco, according to information from the Jalisco Health Secretariat.

According to Roberto Carlos Rivera, general director of Public Health of the SSJ, he assured that the highest peak of infections was recorded in week 9, corresponding to the end of February and beginning of March, with 339 cases. “There has not been a single week in which there was not at least one case,” said Rivera, and stressed that although the virus is still present, the duration of the symptoms has been decreasing.

Regarding the calculation of active cases, Rivera explained that this indicator has been difficult to maintain, due to changes in the behavior of the disease: “In the end, the federation ended up lowering the calculation to only five days, and the truth is that right now it is difficult to say for sure how many there would be active cases,” he explained.

One positive aspect that Rivera highlighted is that a large part of the population has developed some resistance to the virus, either by having previously contracted covid-19 or by being vaccinated. This has generated a level of immunity that helps reduce the severity of current cases: “Many people have already gotten sick with covid, and that gives us a certain immunity that is added to that offered by the vaccines.”

Is there mass vaccination against covid in Jalisco?

However, Rivera also mentioned that mass vaccination campaigns were not carried out this year because the Jalisco Ministry of Health rejected the doses provided by the federation, which were not recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). “We in government institutions do not accept the vaccine,” he said.

Despite not carrying out mass vaccinations, the SSJ focused its efforts on protecting the most vulnerable groups. During the 2023 and 2024 vaccination campaigns, 50 thousand doses were administered to older adults, children, people with chronic diseases and the obese population.

How many cases of covid-19 are there in Jalisco?

In week 31, which covers from July 28 to August 3, 121 cases of covid-19 were detected in Jalisco, without any deaths being reported.

Fernando Petersen, Secretary of Health of Jalisco, indicated that this figure is not alarming and is within what is expected. “It is not a number that alarms us… we will continue to monitor the cases of covid-19 week by week,” he said.

Petersen also warned about the possibility of a spike in cases during the remainder of the vacation period: “We would not be surprised if we had a spike, let’s hope not, but it would not be strange.”

How to take care of yourself from covid before returning to school?

Recommendations to prevent the spread of the virus include wearing a face mask, constantly washing hands, avoiding touching your face, greeting people from a distance, cleaning surfaces frequently, and going to the doctor at the first symptoms.

Current symptoms of Covid-19 include dry cough, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, upset stomach, fever, and loss of taste or smell. Although Rivera indicated that these symptoms are not as common as at the beginning of the pandemic, they should not be ruled out.

In view of the upcoming return to school, Rivera recommended that minors who present any symptoms related to Covid-19 not attend school and be evaluated by a doctor, who must provide a justification for their absence. “With these small actions that we have made customary during the pandemic, we can avoid a massive increase in infections,” he concluded.
