According to Mexican authorities, a vehicle carrying migrants was ambushed by unidentified assailants in northern Mexico. One migrant lost his life, while eight others were injured in the shooting that took place on Sunday in Tubutama township, located about 47 miles south of Sasabe and near the Arizona border.
The deceased migrant was a boy from southern Mexico, whereas those who sustained injuries included nationals from Mexico, Ecuador, and Africa. Prosecutors in Sonora state have launched an investigation into the incident.
At this point, it is unclear what prompted the attack; however, the region has been plagued by violence between rival gangs of human smugglers affiliated with warring drug cartels. These cartels often extort money from smugglers who transport migrants through their territories and may resort to attacking migrants if they fail to pay these demanded payments.
