USDA confident in challenge to Mexico’s GM corn ban

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is confident that it will win its challenge against Mexico’s ban on genetically modified corn imports.

Alexis Taylor, Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs, stated that the USDA expects to receive a favorable decision from the panel by the end of this year.

According to Taylor, the USDA has strong arguments based on sound science, the structure of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and the use of scientific evidence in making decisions.

The ban on GM corn imports is currently under review as part of the agreement, and the USDA is optimistic about its chances. This comes as a significant development for U.S. corn producers, who have been impacted by the ban.

Taylor also highlighted that despite the ban, exports of yellow corn to Mexico continue to grow, indicating a positive trend. Additionally, she expressed the USDA’s eagerness to engage with the new Mexican government under President-Elect Claudia Sheinbaum, who is set to take office this fall.

The challenge was a key topic during Taylor’s speech at the Kansas Governor’s Summit on Agricultural Growth in Manhattan.
