Mauricio Vila leaves pending projects in Yucatán

The administration of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal leaves in the investment portfolio 28 projects from companies, mainly foreign, interested in establishing their plants in Yucatán, reported the Secretary of Economic Development and Labor, Ernesto Herrera Novelo.

In an interview at the deep-water port, where he participated in the presentation of the construction of the Diques Peninsulares shipyard, Herrera Novelo stated that during Vila Dosal’s term, 390 investment projects were brought in, with a total amount exceeding 170 billion pesos.

Mauricio Vila leaves 28 pending company projects in Yucatán

The official informed that the elected governor (Joaquín Díaz Mena, from Morena) is already aware of this investment portfolio, as is the appointed Secretary of Economy of the next federal government, Marcelo Ebrard, with whom he has met three times.

Today, he will travel again to Mexico City for another meeting with him.

“The important thing is that Yucatán does well. The elected governor called me, and I told him what is pending. I suggested that he mobilize his team to continue managing these investments, so they are not lost,” he said.

What sectors are the pending company projects that Mauricio Vila leaves?

Herrera Novelo stated that the pending investment projects are in the technology sector, such as software and hardware development, artificial intelligence, clean wind and solar energy, and the automotive sector, mainly parts for electric cars.

He also explained that the suppliers are on the East Coast of the United States, and investors from Korea, Japan, and China are knocking on Yucatán’s doors because they want to have their factories in the T-MEC region.

Additionally, investments in the agro-industrial sector continue.

Investors seek to reach municipalities in the interior of the state, as they can find labor there and have more space for the development of their industries. They are particularly interested in Tizimín, Progreso, Poxilá (Umán), and Peto.

Herrera Novelo has already met with Marcelo Ebrard

“The Secretary of Economy appointed by the elected president, Marcelo Ebrard, is already working with all the economic secretaries of the country, looking at projects so they are not left behind,” he said.

“I have already had three meetings with him, and tomorrow (today, Thursday) I will have a fourth meeting. He is aware of what is happening in the state in terms of investments.

“I do not withhold information. Following the presentation made by Governor Vila at the National Palace, Secretary Ebrard called me and summoned me. We are now on the fourth meeting. He is looking to implement the Yucatán model in the south-southeast of the country because the economy in the states of Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Puebla is difficult.”

Why was the Fincantieri shipping project paused?

He was asked about the Fincantieri shipping company, which announced an investment of 220 million dollars in two shipyards in Progreso in 2021.

“They are on pause. They really need 40 hectares to develop their project. This area has already been ceded by the federal government to the state government,” he reported.

“The elected president (Claudia Sheinbaum) asked us to halt the expansion of the deep-water port of Progreso because it seems that she no longer wants it to be 40 hectares, but 80 or 90 hectares.”

Herrera Novelo revealed that the Fincantieri project is on hold due to regulatory issues, but if they decided to start the construction of their two shipyards, the 40 hectares are already available for it.

“They can start working now; it is legal, and the cession of the 40 hectares requested by the state government is signed,” he affirmed.

“The elected president (Claudia Sheinbaum) is receiving the 32 Asiponas from across the country so that they can show her all the projects for the ports and she can prepare the budget.”

Vila asked for a loan of 3,000 million pesos which was authorized by Congress

The state official said that even the loan of over 3,000 million pesos requested by the current state government and approved by the State Congress will have a two-month extension with the bank financier.

Who will be the head of Economic Development in Yucatán with Huacho Díaz?

The position of Secretary of Economic Development is still undefined.

The current head of that office, Ernesto Herrera Novelo, is one of the three candidates suggested by the business sector to continue in his post in the incoming government, but the final decision rests with the elected governor, Huacho Díaz.
