Oaxaca: Serious contamination of Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido is exposed; and the Government of Colotepec is seeking platinum certification. What cynicism!

Through a video posted on TikTok, user Beto Puerto has exposed a worrying case of contamination at Zicatela Beach, one of the main tourist gems of the Oaxaca Coast region.

In the video, which has generated a wave of indignation on social media, Beto Puerto shows how a sewage spill flows freely down Calle del Morro, one of the access roads to the beach. “We are here in plain sight, and this is what tourists find when they arrive at Zicatela, a beach that is supposed to be certified as clean,” the complainant says with evident frustration.

Zicatela is recognized as a clean beach under the NMX-AA-120-SCFI-2016 standard, a distinction that is now being questioned in light of the evidence presented in the video. “It is a disgrace, here we are at Playa Zicatela and the water goes directly to our sea,” stresses Beto Puerto, who also points out that the municipal government of Santa María de Colotepec, responsible for the management of this area, is seeking a platinum certification, which he considers an act of cynicism in the face of the lack of action regarding the environmental problems facing the beach.

The complaint has sparked a debate on waste management and the preservation of natural resources in one of the most important tourist destinations in Oaxaca, with growing demands for the authorities to act immediately and effectively.
