The municipal president of Isla Mujeres, Atenea Gómez Ricalde, assured that tourist occupancy remained unchanged during this vacation period compared to last year’s season, after commenting that May and June were not good months for tourism, and emphasizing that this has been changing in the last two months.
“We closed with good hotel occupancy, but more importantly, good tourist influx, which are different things for us. Just look at this weekend at the people returning from Isla Mujeres to Cancún on the last boats to see that we are one of the best tourist destinations,” Gómez Ricalde told Noticaribe.
The mayor also admitted that there was no significant spike due to external factors, such as Hurricane Beryl, which affected all destinations in Quintana Roo before the vacation period began. However, she stated that the most significant arrival of tourists occurred at the end of these vacations.
As reported by REPORTUR.mx, hoteliers in Cancún have asked the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), led by Andrés Martínez Reynoso, for another strategy to promote the destinations in the northern part of the state due to the great disappointment they experienced with occupancy below 70% during the summer, which represented drops of up to 15 points. “We came from summers with 90% occupancy, and now we need to work on greater promotion to attract more visitors, so that the other seasons are positive, and this leads to greater tourism,” said Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, at the time.
