Police accused of killing student in Oaxaca

El Gobernador de Oaxaca pidió a la Fiscalía estatal investigar los hechos.

According to a letter from the relatives of Diego Ignacio Paz, a student at the Universidad Anáhuac in Oaxaca, the agents tried to extort him, intimidated him, chased him and killed him.

“Diego and his friends were at the paddle club, where they met to go to one of their houses on Avenida Ferrocarril. They traveled in three different vehicles, the first vehicle being Diego’s,” they said.

“Upon arriving at the Breathalyzer installed in front of CBTis 123, around 12 am, they were harassed by a traffic police officer, asking for money to let them through. When they refused to pay, the police officer began to insult and intimidate them, requesting support from more police officers, and trying to continue on their way, they were chased by officers from the Santa Lucia del Camino Police, causing Diego to lose control of the vehicle.”

According to the version, the uniformed men began to pull them and hit them inside the car, forcing them to get out so they could continue attacking them.

“And in their uncontrolled violence, already threatened, they shot him at point-blank range, causing a perforated bladder and ruptured viscera, with multiple fractures and bruises on the hip and head. Given their negligence and trying to alter the events, they went to dump Diego’s dying body in the Ciudad de las Canteras. For their part, Josué was taken into custody with one eye almost popping out of its socket,” they denounced.

They pointed out that neighbors in the area who witnessed the events mentioned that the young men were begging for help and for them to stop hitting them.

“Unfortunately, Diego lost his life due to the brutality and uncontrollable violence with which the police and traffic officers of Santa Lucia del Camino act. Let this homicide not go unpunished, let us raise our voices for Diego so that justice is done. Let us not allow them to tarnish the image of a son, friend and student,” they asked.
Jara demands that those responsible be arrested

Meanwhile, the Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara, demanded that the state Attorney General’s Office arrest those responsible and begin an investigation.

“I strongly condemn the murder of a young man in the Municipality of Santa Lucía del Camino by the Municipal Police. It is urgent to arrest the police officers who acted irresponsibly in this unfortunate event,” he said.

“I ask the Attorney General of the State of Oaxaca to arrest those responsible and begin an urgent, thorough and objective investigation. Municipal President Juan Carlos García Márquez must act accordingly to clarify this aberrant event; I will be attentive and follow up on the work of the Attorney General. Nothing and no one can be above the law.”

University rejects violence

The Rector of the Anáhuac University of Oaxaca, Yoani Rodríguez, said that the event has shocked the university community.

“Diego will always be present in my prayers, and I pray that his parents soon find comfort in faith and hope.

“In these difficult times, I reaffirm my commitment to peace in all areas of our lives and I strongly reject any form of violence. I sincerely thank those who have shown their support and understanding in this difficult time for everyone, and especially for Diego’s family, whom we spiritually accompany on their painful journey,” she said.

In a statement, the university demanded that the authorities clarify the case.
