To complete the Tren Maya works before the end of this administration, the federal government formalized the expropriation of about two hectares belonging to the Ejido Playa del Carmen, where the Tren Maya route passes.
The Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (Sedatu) formalized the public utility cause in favor of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) to expropriate 1.9 hectares of land in the northwest of this Quintana Roo city.
The document published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) states: “Belonging to the ejido ‘Playa del Carmen,’ it was requested for the construction of railway infrastructure works, operation of the Tren Maya Project and its complementary works, as well as the provision of public freight and passenger rail transport services. Consequently, the public utility causes of establishment and exploitation are accredited.”
The area is located towards the landfill, where in February 2022, the jungle clearing began, which finally led to the struggle undertaken by environmentalists against federal works for the alleged damage to the local ecosystem.
The lands are part of the Ejido Playa del Carmen, whose assembly will be compensated at approximately 500 pesos per square meter, one of the best paid in these processes, as in some ejidos, the cost barely reached 200 pesos per meter.
“FONATUR Tren Maya, S.A. de C.V. is responsible for paying compensation for the expropriated surface in the amount of $9,799,449.05 (nine million seven hundred ninety-nine thousand four hundred forty-nine pesos 05/100 M.N.) indicated in the appraisal issued by the Institute of Administration and Appraisals of National Assets, and under the terms indicated in the considering part of this decree,” the document states.
It is worth mentioning that the Tren Maya section 5 North tracks operate on these lands, which have been providing passenger service from Playa del Carmen to the Cancún Airport station, one of the most important on the route, since last March.
Second Chapter of Documentary Premieres Today
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the premiere of the second chapter of the Tren Maya documentary, which aims to convey the importance of one of the largest works of his administration and is a production created by journalist Epigmenio Ibarra.
It was highlighted that it will have at least three different sections where information related to the railway construction infrastructure will be offered, one of its sections inaugurated in December 2023.
The Tabasco native announced that it will be available starting today, Thursday, September 5, at 9:00 PM, and to view it, interested parties must access the official networks of the Mexican government, such as through the official X account of Andrés Manuel/@lopezobrador.
The president showed a preview of the transmission content, where he appears flying over one of the areas where the Tren Maya passes, which is part of Puerto Morelos, on the Cancún-Mérida route.
The president is seen in a helicopter, boasting his intention to increase the more than 30,000 tourists who arrive in Cancún, that is, to enter the “heart of the Mayan nation.”
The documentary highlights the culture of Quintana Roo with images of the beautiful Caribbean Sea, including Holbox Island, Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, Cancún, the Riviera Maya (which includes Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum), Cozumel Island, Maya Ka’an, as well as the Grand Costa Maya (Mahahual, Bacalar, and Chetumal).
