Hay Festival Querétaro kicks off, epicenter of reflections for art and hope

The ninth edition of the Hay Festival kicked off with a ribbon cutting by the mayor of Querétaro, Luis Nava, and the international director of the festival, Cristina Fuentes La Roche, at the Teatro de la Ciudad, where the first conference of the program was held, led by the writer Neige Sinno and Elvira Liceaga.

Fuentes La Roche highlighted the presence of speakers, writers, thinkers, philosophers and artists from 22 countries, with 90 activities in different cultural venues in the city of Querétaro and in other delegations of the State.

“These festivals work as a great antidote to polarization, things are not black or white, and here we talk about them, we imagine them and we discuss them, and we imagine more sustainable worlds, with this event we begin the great banquet of ideas that will have 90 events and guests from 22 countries,” said La Roche.

He added that the festival seeks to ensure equal access to culture for all residents.

At the start of the Hay Festival Querétaro, one of the highlights of the event was present, the Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi, who has fought for the rights of children and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.

Satyarthi expressed his joy at participating in this edition of the festival, and commented that spaces for reflection such as the Hay Festival are necessary to be epicenters of peace, ideas and cultural expressions.

Luis Nava thanked the company SURA for its support in organizing the festival, and welcomed all those present. “I also thank the municipality for all the joint work to carry out the Hay Festival.”

“In Querétaro we believe in the power of ideas, that we are capable of dreaming, ideas are the vehicle to discover what is happening in our environment and in our society, and in our world, we need hope,” said the official.
