Taxi Drivers’ Union ‘Tiburones del Caribe’ Resume Protests in Tulum

Once again, the group of taxi drivers will return to protests following the arrest of Eliazar Sagrero Ordóñez.

The taxi drivers affiliated with the Tiburones del Caribe union have begun to gather at the location on Federal Highway 307 where they will once again hold a peaceful protest near the Tulum Archaeological Zone, in support of their leader, Eliazar Sagrero Ordóñez.

The mobilization arises in response to the arrest of Sagrero Ordóñez on August 29 by agents of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo, who faces charges of aggravated homicide and attempted homicide.

It is expected that the taxi drivers will begin to gather to express their support for Sagrero Ordóñez. Although the exact route of the protest has not yet been determined, it is estimated that it will include a partial blockade of Federal Highway 307, in addition to the participation of tourist transport vans.

The arrest of Sagrero Ordóñez has caused deep discontent among union members, who claim that the charges against him have a political background. They assert that his arrest is linked to recent adjustments in taxi fares and the growing competition from apps like Uber and DiDi.

During the operation, Juan Manuel “N” was also arrested, and a .380 caliber firearm was confiscated. The union has called for the protest under the slogan “Our leader is not alone,” denouncing that the arrest is an attempt to destabilize the union and harm their interests.

On August 30, the Ninth District Court of Cancún granted a suspension in favor of Sagrero Ordóñez to protect him against possible acts of incommunication and torture, although his legal situation remains unresolved. The Attorney General’s Office has not yet set a date for the indictment and binding hearing, while an amparo is being processed to ensure the human rights of the union leader.
