Veracruz suffers the effects of “La Niña”: intense rains after severe droughts

For the months of January and February, lower than normal temperatures are forecast, explains the director of the Center for Earth Sciences at the University of Veracruz, Carlos Manuel Welsh Rodriguez, who said that in the coming weeks it is anticipated that heavy rains will be recorded in the state as a consequence of the La Niña phenomenon.

After a spring season where there was a strong drought and an extreme summer, he explains that curiously or particularly this year we are experiencing the aftermath of the La Niña phenomenon that has been very present.

What will the La Niña phenomenon cause in Veracruz?

That is why, he adds, there is a period of intense rain on the Pacific coast, much more than in the Gulf of Mexico, although it has not exceeded normal, because it remains at normal levels, but it has been with a lot of rain that is noticeable in the amount of humidity in the atmosphere.

For the Atlantic forecast, we know that the maximum surface temperature of the water has been exceeded on 4 occasions, which is a very significant anomaly because we have never had such a warm Atlantic Ocean.

Will the first cold front affect Veracruz? The potential for rain and storms will increase

“So, what is expected is a very intense hurricane season that has not started with the intensity that we expected, despite how warm the Atlantic is. Some phenomena are forming, but they have not reached the point of impact. They have not reached the point of forming, developing and impacting the Gulf of Mexico. It will probably happen in the next few weeks,” he explains.

He warns that what the weather forecasts say is that there will be a period of intense rain this fall, for the Gulf, the eastern slope of the Gulf of Mexico, well above normal values. That is, we are going to have rain above average values.

He commented that in terms of cold, it is expected that there will be values above the average for the fall, now that the cold front season is about to begin.

How are cold fronts formed?

He emphasizes that cold fronts are formed by a northern component with a high degree of humidity that ends in rain, with the contact of the humid or hot water vapor with the one that arrives, then it leads to intense rains.

The UV scientist points out that the forecast for next winter is that it will be very cold, due to the humidity conditions in the atmosphere. “It is expected that the temperatures of January and February 2025 will be below the average temperature for the state of Veracruz and particularly for the mountain area. All this due to the La Niña phenomenon,” he concluded.
