Workers of the Judicial Branch are protesting outside the Senate of the Republic, where they blocked all the entrances to prevent legislators from discussing the reform proposed by outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Since early Thursday, workers have been intermittently blocking Paseo de la Reforma, one of the main avenues of Mexico City, at the height of the Senate. The protesters have set up tents next to the building.
The workers are expected to remain there in protest for several days, as it is expected that the Senate commissions will discuss the judicial reform initiative on Sunday, September 9, and then take it to the Plenary, where the almost majority of Morena and the allied parties (PT and PVEM) could approve it next week.
Meanwhile, reinforcements are coming. PJ workers from other states organized caravans that are heading to Mexico City to attend the demonstration in the Upper House.
The workers have asked that the Senate’s Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) receive a delegation, so that they can express their concerns, denouncing that the judicial reform will affect their labor rights.
Caravans of Judicial Branch workers travel to CDMX
The members of the Judicial Branch carried out a caravan that left from the city of Xalapa, Veracruz, to reach Mexico City, in which they walked some sections while others chose to get on the transports that accompanied them.
In addition, some other people left from other regions of the state such as Veracruz, Córdoba and others, to also join this protest that is taking place.
“The united society is truly the only one that can promote the discourse to stop the so-called reform of the Judicial Branch (…) its purpose is not to face the real problems that justice has in Mexico, which we all truly suffer from,” said Judge Mario de la Medina in the demonstrations.
“Without the judiciary, who will protect you?” they shout as part of the slogans, as they advance on the highways. Among the people who will support the demonstration at the Senate, some have already arrived at the site where they joined the camp that was set up. While others still report that they are still in transit to join their companions.
