Landslide on Veracruz hill buries entire family: three die and four manage to escape alive

Following heavy rains on Thursday night and early Friday morning in Veracruz, a family of seven members were buried by a landslide in a neighborhood of Xalapa, local authorities reported.

In a statement, the Civil Protection Secretariat of the State of Veracruz reported that three people died in the incident, including a man, a woman and her baby, and that the other four inhabitants and a pet dog managed to get out on their own.

During the early hours of today, elements of the National Guard, the Public Security Secretariat, the state and municipal police, as well as firefighters and personnel from the Red Cross participated in the rescue efforts of the family.

The rescue operation ended at 7:00 in the morning, when rescuers found a woman among the rubble and mud.

However, the teams continued to review the scene of the events and personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office carried out the corresponding actions at the point.

The landslide occurred in the 9 de abril neighborhood, where local media assured that the neighbors had previously reported a water leak to the Municipal Water and Sanitation Commission of Xalapa (CMAS), after it had been spilling down the hill for at least a day and that it was not attended to by the authorities.

During the 2023 rainy season, various landslides have been recorded in the state of Veracruz.

In the town of Villa Cichapa, in the municipality of Molocán, 150 homes affected by flooding were reported in three neighborhoods, as well as a landslide at kilometer five of the Nuevo Teapa-Cosoleacaque highway.

In addition, in the state capital, the authorities attended to a landslide caused by the rupture of a pipe in the Plan de Ayala neighborhood.
