The hotel sector in Quintana Roo has once again issued a strong warning about the negative impact that roadblocks organized by taxi drivers and recent customs practices at Cancun International Airport are having. David Ortiz, president of the Tulum Hotel Association, said that these actions have already caused the cancellation of several tourist groups and are damaging the image of the destination.
“It is extremely unwise to seek to affect tourists for self-interest,” said Ortiz, referring to the blockades that have occurred on three occasions in different areas of the state, organized by members of the Taxi Drivers Union. These blockades not only cause delays, but also cause irreparable damage to the image of Quintana Roo as a world-class tourist destination. “This goes beyond a few hours or an afternoon; this undermines the confidence of visitors to come or return to the destination,” added the hotel leader.
He pointed out that the damage is not only economic, regretting that taxi drivers do not seem to be aware of the long-term consequences of their actions. “It is unacceptable and we should not tolerate visitors being affected in this way; we trust that the authorities will do everything possible to prevent events like this from happening again, because the economy of Quintana Roo depends largely on our visitors,” he emphasized.
In addition to the blockades, the Cancun airport has also been the scene of worrying situations. In the same context of the taxi blockades, acts of violence against private vehicles were reported, some of which were wrongly identified as transportation services by applications such as Uber. “The scenes of violence seen at the Cancun airport affect us all,” reiterated David Ortiz.
On the other hand, he said that hoteliers are concerned about the unexpected charging of customs fees to tourists who enter with more than one electronic device, such as laptops or tablets. He denounced that the authorities of the Customs Directorate are demanding up to 190 dollars or more, which has surprised many visitors. Ortiz Mena, described the situation as “incredible” and warned that it affects tourists who work remotely, a growing trend since Covid.
The hotel sector in Cancun has formalized a request to Sedetur to control the blockades that have occurred at the access to the Cancun airport, as this affects the arrival of tourism and the promotion they carry out. as he anticipated
