In Coahuila, one suicide is recorded every day; in Durango, every two days

The Citizen Observatory of La Laguna pointed out that the number of suicides has increased and is worrying both in Coahuila and Durango.

“It is worrying that Coahuila and Durango are increasing in the number of suicides. The problem is worse among adolescents and young people, in fact when we analyze the main causes of death we find that car accidents are in first place and suicides in second place,” said Luis Alfredo Medina, Research Coordinator at the Citizen Observatory of La Laguna.

According to an analysis carried out by the Citizen Observatory of La Laguna, in the framework of the day against suicide, in Coahuila every day a person takes his or her life and in Durango every two days.

More suicides than intentional homicides
In both entities, a relevant fact is that in recent years there have been more suicides than intentional homicides.

The analysis carried out by the Citizen Observatory, based on data from Inegi and state prosecutors, shows that between 2012 and 2016, an average of 170 suicides were recorded per year, but in the last five years this figure has increased to such an extent that in 2023 this average doubled.

8 out of 10 are men

During the last year there were 68 women and 274 men and this means that 8 out of 10 people who commit suicide are men. In addition to that, 8.5 percent are between 10 and 19 years old, 30.2 percent between 20 and 29 years old, 27.4 percent are between 30 and 39 years old, 16 percent between 40 and 49 years old, 10.1 percent between 50 and 59 years old and 7.5 percent over 60 years old.

In the state of Durango, since 2012 the number of registered suicides has maintained a constant annual increase, to the point that in 2023 there were twice as many suicides as 11 years ago.

In this entity, 9 out of 10 people who commit suicide are men. During the last year there were 23 women and 143 men. 17.7 percent are between 10 and 19 years old, 27.4 percent between 20 and 29 years old, 15.2 percent between 30 and 39 years old, 11.6 percent between 50 and 59 years old and 12.1 percent over 60 years old.

Both entities are among the 10 with the highest suicide rate per 100 thousand inhabitants. Coahuila is in fourth place with 10.9 and Durango is in tenth place with 91.
