Francisco Madrid Flores, director of the Sustainable Tourism Advanced Research Center, explained that the estimate they made for the arrival of passengers and airplanes contemplates 2.2 million fewer from the United States and 2.3 million on domestic routes and from other destinations, so it is necessary to increase tourism promotion since there is also an impact on external issues, such as the volatility of the global financial markets, the slowdown of the economy of the neighboring country and competing destinations.

“The drop in flights would represent 31,557 fewer for the rest of the year; of these, 12,166 fewer from the United States alone and 12,622 from domestic routes. The latter, affected by the situation of flight reviews, among which there is a significant drop, especially from Volaris, which showed a decrease of 2.8%. The rest would be from other routes,”

he explained.

Cancun loses tourism for these six reasons

According to Starc’s analysis, after a good winter season 2023-2024, the results of this year’s summer again show a clear pattern of deceleration influenced mainly by

insufficient tourism promotion,
insecurity,
fatigue of the destinations,
intensity of the effort of the competition,
insufficient air supply in the domestic market and
the exchange rate.
He recalled that, from April to August, the Cancun airport showed a decrease in international passengers of 667 thousand, that is, 7.7%.

“Facing the end of the year and the winter season 2024-2025, in addition to the prevalence of the above factors, the Mexican tourism industry faces great challenges due to internal and external factors that must be taken into account,”
