PROFECO va por restaurantes y bares que exigen consumo mínimo y propinas

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency reinforces its commitment to consumer rights, offering new ways to report abusive practices in the collection of tips.

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) has implemented a new channel of attention through WhatsApp so that consumers can report abusive practices in bars and restaurants. The number enabled is 55-8078-0488, where you can report improper charges of tips, minimum consumption, or non-compliance in the display of prices.

The tip, remember, is a voluntary gratuity and not a mandatory charge. Although many establishments suggest a 10% tip, PROFECO emphasizes that consumers are not obligated to pay it if they do not wish to. If a restaurant or bar requires the payment of a tip or a minimum consumption, it can be reported by users.

To make an effective complaint, PROFECO requests that consumers provide the following information:

In addition to the WhatsApp line, consumers can use PROFECO’s social networks to make their complaints. On Facebook, they can be found as ProfecoOficial, while on X they can do so through @AtencionProfeco. The email [email protected] is also available.

Among the main obligations of bars and restaurants are:

Display clear prices and include taxes.
Provide proof of consumption.
Do not discriminate in access or service.

PROFECO warns that it will impose sanctions on establishments that force or pressure customers to leave tips, pointing out that it is prohibited to place containers with the legend “tip” on the tables. In addition, the Federal Consumer Protection Law establishes that suppliers cannot impose abusive conditions or coercive practices, such as forced collection of tips.

With this new service, PROFECO seeks to protect the rights of consumers, promoting a fair and transparent environment in establishments throughout the country.
