Almost a week after leaving office as president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited the state of Veracruz, where he was the protagonist of a controversial moment that has unleashed a wave of reactions on social media. During his visit to the Casa Benito Juárez, the president dodged a bottle that was thrown in his direction, which led to a series of accusations and defenses among those involved.
The incident occurred in an atmosphere charged with political tensions, since López Obrador was in Veracruz to inaugurate the “Leyes de Reforma” Cultural Center. The visit attracted a group of protesters who opposed the judicial reform proposed by his administration. In the midst of this confrontation, a fight broke out between the president’s supporters and the workers of the Judicial Branch, who were there to express their disagreement.
A video that quickly went viral shows the exact moment when the bottle flies near the president, who quickly dodges the aggression. Although many accused the workers of the Judicial Branch of being the aggressors, since at that time they were protesting against the reform proposed by AMLO, they distanced themselves.
The workers of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, as well as the Association of Federal Judges (JUFED), issued statements in which they disclaimed any responsibility in the incident. They affirmed that the protest in which they participated was peaceful and that they did not attack anyone.
In their statements, the representatives of the Judicial Branch condemned the actions of some Morena supporters, who, according to them, threw objects towards the presidential entourage. They affirmed that they were victims of aggression and that the climate of hostility was generated by people close to President López Obrador’s party.
In the midst of the controversy, Jorge Cedillo Guevara, an official of the Government Secretariat of the state of Veracruz and a member of Morena, found himself in the eye of the storm after being identified as the individual who threw the bottle at AMLO, to the point that his name became a trending topic on social media X.
In a message posted on social media, Cedillo defended himself, stating that he had been attacked first. According to his story, the throwing of the bottle was a response to a previous aggression he received from protesters.
He stressed that when he threw the bottle, the area where López Obrador was located was behind him, and that the object bounced off an umbrella without causing harm to anyone: “A bottle fell on my back and, wrongly, I answered and threw it back. The bottle bounced off an umbrella, not hitting any of the people who were there,” he said.
Cedillo stressed his loyalty to the president, stating that he has always been an Obrador supporter since he was young and that his action was not an attack, but a response to what he considered a provocation.
He also stressed that his intention was never to attack López Obrador, defending his position and pointing out that the real aggressors were those who had previously attacked him.
“I have always been an Obrador supporter, since I was 17 years old, we have always been supporting our president, I can only say that it is an honor to be with Obrador and I am not the one who attacked the President,” he concluded.
