Drag queen and transvestite shows banned in San Nicolas, Nuevo Leon

The City Council of the metropolitan municipality of San Nicolás de los Garza approved the prohibition of “shows called drag queens or transvestites.”

The Regulation of Shows approved in its modification, replaces the one that was in force since March 2005, and now, establishes in article 95, section XXIV, that it is prohibited to “perform shows where naked or semi-naked people perform movements, dance, dance or walk exhibiting their body, as well as the shows called drag queens and transvestites.”

The regulation not only regulates events in public spaces, but those that are organized so that the public, participating actively or passively, through payment or free of charge, attend to have fun or be educated, and all sports, cultural and recreational activities; whether they are held in open or closed spaces.”

Meanwhile, the first protests of rejection of the measure of the city council of PAN extraction arose and first of all, the Trans Monterrey Collective expressed its concern about this decision.

“It is clearly an unconstitutional ban, which affects the rights of diverse populations, in this case to free expression, but which can have other expressions of violence,” said Sylvia Sofía, coordinator of the collective.

She recalled that historically Nuevo León has been a violent state with LGBTIQ+ populations, especially with trans women.

The independent councilor Claudia Carranza, promoted the reform that was approved with the argument of allowing children “to have access to shows where half-naked people perform dances or where so-called drag queen and transvestite shows are presented in public spaces, which can not only confuse them, but also expose them to content that they are not prepared to understand.”

According to the councilor, it is not about stigmatizing or discriminating against anyone, nor is it trying to restrict the freedom of expression of adults or those who participate in these shows.

“As a responsible society, we have the duty to ensure that children grow up in an environment that allows them to become healthy, happy and emotionally stable adults. I invite you to reflect on this proposal, not as a restriction, but as an action of love and protection towards our children,” he added.

Mayor Daniel Carrillo considered that it is “an interesting and valid proposition, which is good that it now integrates this conviction and this vision into the regulations of the municipality, because it is known to you that one of the proposals of this government is to create the Secretariat of the Family, which is precisely what it seeks is the integration of all family elements.”

The municipality of San Nicolás, north of the Monterrey metropolitan area, cancelled the ‘Cuenti Drag’ event in 2023, which was to take place at the Monterrey International Book Fair, due to alleged pressure from some conservative groups in the state who disagreed with the reading of stories to children by drag queens.

Now, LGBTIQ+ activists are preparing legal actions to overturn the modification to the municipal regulations, since they consider that it incurs discrimination and incites violence against people of sexual diversity.

Sylvia Sofía pointed out that this year alone, there have been six transfemicides in Nuevo León, a violence that reflects this historical structure that has always existed in the state.
