The Secretary of Health of Coahuila, Eliud Aguirre Vázquez, reported that, to date, 15 cases of rickettsia have been registered in the state during 2024, of which 11 correspond to the municipality of Saltillo.

According to the National Epidemiological Bulletin, a decrease in cases has been observed compared to 2023, when 20 cases were recorded in the same period, representing a decrease of 25%.

It should be remembered that at the end of 2023, 27 cases were registered in the entity, of which more than 70% were reported in Saltillo. In total, Coahuila recorded 17 deaths last year, while at least five deaths have been reported so far this year, four of them in Saltillo.

Eliud Aguirre said that campaigns are still being implemented to eradicate rickettsia and prevent the proliferation of ticks in the state. “These are permanent campaigns. We call on the population to, if they have pets, perform the necessary hygiene, deworm them and make sure they are vaccinated. They must always be aware of their pets.”

Regarding stray dogs, identified as one of the biggest problems for the proliferation of ticks, Aguirre said that the Municipal Public Health Secretariat carries out canine control in each of the municipalities. The state agency, for its part, carries out surveys of dogs in street situations that cause some type of injury or bite, so that they can be observed and determine if they have any disease.

The municipality’s Dog Control department is also responsible for collecting homeless dogs and taking them to a shelter. Those that do have an owner can be claimed by their owners.
