Taxes on tourists impact Baja California, says governor

The fee charged to foreign visitors at the San Ysidro pedestrian gate impacts Baja California, said Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, and attributed it to the fact that the authorities of the National Migration Institute do not know the border dynamics.

She said that since Friday they have been in contact with the new delegate of that organization, José Alejandro Palau Hernández, who started the fee from the first day.

“The truth is that they have just made a new appointment, we are making the corresponding arrangements with the federal authorities, I understand that they do not know the border dynamics of Tijuana… We must remember that the dynamics of the border states, people come and go every day; asking them for their passport every time they return to their hometown, to their country, seems to me to go very much against the policy of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador,” said the governor.

She added that they will continue talking with the federal authorities about the issue. When asked about the new delegate’s response to his request, he replied that he only said that he will review it.

“At the end of the day, it is very contrary to what President Andrés Manuel López Obrador establishes, who always talks about the doors being open to all our countrymen, to all migrants; this impacts tourism but also impacts the citizens who live in Tijuana and who cross the border every day,” he said.

Finally, he insisted that as the responsible authority in Baja California, they will speak with the INAMI authority at the national level so that they are clear about the president’s commitment in this matter and that they do not act in such a rigid manner.
