Microsoft to spend $1.3 billion in Mexico on cloud, AI tech

Microsoft has announced plans to invest $1.3 billion over the next three years to enhance its infrastructure in Mexico for cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

According to Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, this investment represents the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in Mexico. “We’re doubling down on bringing more capacity to Mexico,” he said at a recent event in Mexico City.

The investment will be focused on improving connectivity and promoting the adoption of AI technology among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Mexico.

Microsoft aims to reach 5 million Mexicans and support 30,000 SMBs through this initiative within the next three years. This move is expected to positively impact various sectors, including those that currently utilize Microsoft’s AI tools, such as breadmaker Bimbo and cement producer Cemex.

Furthermore, Microsoft has partnered with Viasat to bring internet connectivity to over 150,000 Mexicans who previously lacked cellular access by the end of 2025. This project will help bridge the digital divide in Mexico and provide more opportunities for its citizens.

Incoming Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard welcomed this investment as a significant step towards enhancing Mexico’s AI capabilities. He expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of the planned investment on the country’s economic growth and development.

Microsoft’s $1.3 billion investment over the next three years is a testament to the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in Mexico and promoting digital transformation across various sectors.
