The growing exodus of trained kitchen staff to Canada has become an increasingly noticeable phenomenon in Tulum, as confirmed by various sources within the gastronomic and tourism sector.
Claudio Cortés Méndez, union commissioner of the CROC in Tulum, explained that this exodus of workers is mainly due to the attractive job offers that Canada is offering, especially in the restaurant sector, which includes pizzerias and other fast food establishments.
“The working conditions in Canada, added to the possibility of accessing a better standard of living, are motivating many trained workers from Tulum to seek new opportunities abroad,” said Cortés Méndez.
This phenomenon, far from being isolated, has intensified with the opening of new work centers in Canada, leaving Tulum with a notable shortage of qualified kitchen personnel.
Cortés Méndez said that the situation is aggravated because many of the employees who decide to emigrate have crucial training and experience for the efficient operation of kitchens in hotels, which puts the quality of service and the visitor experience at risk.
In a destination like Tulum, where tourism is the pillar of the local economy, the lack of qualified personnel is not a minor issue. The competitiveness of the destination depends largely on the reputation and satisfaction of the customer, and any deterioration in the quality of service could have negative repercussions on the perception of the destination.
Labor migration to Canada is not a new phenomenon; however, in recent years, it has increased significantly due to the growing demand for labor in the North American country. Canadian immigration policies, which facilitate obtaining temporary work permits, have played a key role in this trend.
Given this scenario, hotel sector entrepreneurs in Tulum face an important challenge: finding effective ways to retain their qualified staff. Better salaries, additional benefits and training programs that strengthen the sense of belonging and loyalty towards local companies could be part of the solution to stop the flight of talent and guarantee the stability of the tourism industry in the region.
