On September 19, Águeda Esperilla was detained by elements of the National Guard and alleged “pirate” taxi drivers, and hours later she was released, she reported.
Due to death threats and deprivation of liberty, Águeda Esperilla Soto, spokesperson for Uber drivers in the city, took legal action before the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
She reported, accompanied by her lawyers, that the complaints are against whoever is responsible, after she was detained by elements of the National Guard and alleged “pirate” taxi drivers at Cancún airport on Thursday, September 19, while picking up some friends. However, she was released minutes later without any fine.
This, she said, angered the transporters, who expected her car to be impounded and her to be sanctioned, as has happened with other Uber operators.
Additionally, she noted that with the videos she presented as evidence, the responsible individuals will be identified.
The spokesperson also indicated that she already has protective measures due to these events.
She recounted that on the same day, but at night, a banner with a threatening message towards her appeared in Supermanzana 64.
“I want to hold the ‘pirate’ transporters directly responsible for anything that happens to my family or me, as well as to any colleague,” she expressed.
Her lawyers indicated that once the banner appeared on Thursday night, they immediately requested the images from the surrounding cameras from the prosecutor’s office to locate the person who placed it.
The Uber drivers’ spokesperson mentioned that this is not the only threat she has received, as she has also received messages on her social media.
For this reason, they are demanding an immediate and thorough investigation from the prosecutor’s office.
“What is a fact is the protection these people have from the authorities; these people could not do this if they were not protected, and the National Guard is supposed to be at the airport to maintain order, which is not happening,” she lamented.
She emphasized that what is happening at Cancún airport is very serious.
“I don’t know what has to happen for the authorities to have to put things in order,” she concluded.
