Argentinian Diver Missing for 48 Hours in a Yucatán Cenote: Search Continues

Authorities reported that diver Roberto Omar entered the Dzonbakal cenote in Yucatán but did not come out, prompting rescue efforts.

An Argentinian diver has been missing for 48 hours after entering the Dzonbakal cenote in Yucatán. Authorities reported that he was performing a professional dive, but when it was time for him to surface, he did not, leading to a search operation.

The incident occurred on Friday morning at the Dzonbakal cenote in San Antonio Mulix, Umán, about 49 kilometers south of the city of Mérida, Yucatán. According to initial reports, the diver entered the water at 11:00 AM and has not been seen since.

Local media identified the diver as Roberto Omar, 51, who came to Yucatán for a professional dive in the cenote, which has a minimum depth of 30 centimeters and a maximum depth of 30 meters.

His family revealed that he usually went diving with his children on Fridays, but on October 4th, he went alone.

After the time he was supposed to surface passed at 3:00 PM and he did not, an emergency report was made, and a rescue team was mobilized to try to locate him.

Professional divers from the Yucatán Sports Technical Divers Association, along with the fire department squad, began search and rescue efforts, but so far, they have not been successful.

Due to the search efforts, the cenote area had to be cordoned off to prevent accidents and allow the rescue team to work without interruptions.

The Risks of Swimming in a Cenote

It is important to note that this Yucatán cenote is a semi-open type with a free fall, and to reach the water, one must descend a ladder. The water surface measures 25 meters long and 15 meters wide, and in some parts, it reaches a depth of up to 30 meters.

It is important to point out that one of the main risks of swimming in a cenote is its narrow tunnels, poor visibility, and sudden changes in depth, among others.

For this reason, it is recommended that people who go swimming do so accompanied by an experienced and certified guide, in addition to carrying the appropriate equipment.
