A video shared on social media allegedly shows members of the Tulum Public Security and Citizen Protection Secretariat involved in extorting foreign tourists.
In the footage, two police officers, aboard patrol car 92135, can be seen requesting money in exchange for avoiding supposed fines, which has sparked strong community backlash.
The Tulum Public Security and Citizen Protection Secretariat has taken immediate action to investigate the incidents and ensure those responsible face legal consequences.
In an interview, Roberto Rodríguez Bautista, Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum, revealed that the Internal Affairs Department has formally opened an investigation file following the video’s publication.
The behaviors observed in the video are contrary to the corporation’s disciplinary regime, and a thorough process will be conducted to determine the officers’ responsibility.
Rodríguez Bautista also mentioned that they are seeking to locate potential victims and invite them to file formal complaints against the officers involved in the extortion.
Possible Sanctions
He stated that possible sanctions for officers engaging in such conduct range from 15 days of suspension without pay to permanent removal from the force.
“Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo has been clear from the start of his term: acts of corruption within the security forces will not be tolerated. This government is firmly committed to transparency and justice. The actions of these officers do not reflect the values of our administration and will be punished to the full extent of the law,” emphasized the police chief.
The Public Security Secretariat, under the zero-tolerance policy promoted by the mayor, assures that it will act firmly in this case and any other situation compromising the corporation’s integrity. Additional measures are being taken to reinforce internal protocols and ensure that tourists and residents of Tulum can fully trust the authorities.
