Seybaplaya Freight Rail Branch Must Be Rescued: Coparmex

Alejandro Risueño Rivas, president of Coparmex in Campeche, considered the Federal Government’s decision under Sheinbaum to change the departure point of the Maya Train freight branch from Seybaplaya to Progreso, Yucatán, as inappropriate.

Risueño Rivas also lamented that Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) did not move its offices to Carmen, complicating the situation and leading to lost investments now that the freight train will not be in Seybaplaya.

Nevertheless, the business leader emphasized the importance of working on areas of agreement with the new administration and ensuring that promises are kept.

Risueño Rivas believes that Campeche needs a development hub to attract companies capable of loading and unloading containers onto the railway.

The Maya Train could be a good option for Campeche, but many other efforts are needed to make it impactful; otherwise, it will remain a transportation means without direct impact, he opined.

Campeche is one of the states with the smallest industrial base, putting it at a disadvantage compared to other states in the region like Yucatán, Tabasco, and Veracruz.

The port of Seybaplaya is ideal for new investment opportunities, offering significant competitive advantages, as promoted by the General Directorate of the Integral Port Administration of Campeche (APICAM).

Despite the positive outlook that it would become a port attracting investment, this year saw significant investments to increase its capacity. However, all these plans must wait due to the Federal Government’s change of plans.
