Due to one of the wheels of a train car coming off the rail, the Maya Train, which was traveling in the capital of Campeche, suspended service and had to evacuate passengers.
Although no injuries were reported, the fright and frustration among passengers were evident when they were evacuated from the train cars at the station in the capital of Campeche.
According to a statement from the company, at approximately 3:30 p.m. this Monday, “the train operating on the Cancún-Palenque route, 50 meters after departing from the San Francisco de Campeche station, located in the capital of that state, experienced a track incident in its last train car; therefore, in accordance with established technical procedures, the driver stopped the unit, with no injuries reported among the 123 passengers,” the company stated.
In accordance with the customer assistance protocol, passengers were provided with hydration and food. Beginning at 4:00 p.m., passengers were orderly evacuated to the San Francisco de Campeche station, accompanied by Maya Train personnel, and transported by land to the next station, Edzná, where they continued their original journey aboard another train, according to the report.
The incident prompted a major deployment of personnel from the National Guard, the Mexican Army, and Maya Train workers.
According to information shared on social media, one of the wheels of a train car came off the rail while the train was arriving at the terminal, forcing operations to be temporarily suspended while inspection and response procedures were carried out.
The company stated that the Railway Accident Investigative Commission had been established and was already conducting a technical investigation into the incident.
The other services are operating normally. If any schedule or itinerary adjustments are required as a result of the technical inspection procedures, users will be informed in a timely manner, the company assured.
“Maya Train regrets the inconvenience caused by this incident and reaffirms its commitment to the safety and care of passengers,” the report added.
The federal government increased annual subsidies to the Maya Train by 11% in the second quarter of 2026, yet the state-owned company still lost 9.3 million pesos per day, according to its financial reports.
In addition, estimates for its future freight operations have been reduced by 15%, according to the state-owned company’s most recent reports.
