The placement of a message attributed to the Cártel de Caborca on a vehicular bridge along the Mérida-Campeche federal highway, near Tenabo, opened a new dimension in the assessment of public security in the state.
The discovery is institutionally significant both because of the operational figures mentioned and because of the municipality where it occurred.
The message directly mentions members of the Secretariat of Protection and Citizen Security (SPSC), including Commander José Román Trejo Briceño, who has a previous record of an armed attack against his home in the Guadalupe neighborhood in September 2025.
The text also names officers Erik Oswaldo Segovia Rivera, Carlos Farid Balam Coh, and Julissa Martínez Can, who are accused of alleged acts of extortion.
The location of the incident adds a political dimension to the security situation, as it occurred in Tenabo, a municipality associated with the career and sphere of influence of Ariel Jesús Damas Matú, the current Technical and Planning Secretary of the SPSC and a close collaborator of the agency’s head, Marcela Muñoz.
SPSC confirms response to the incident
Following the events, the SPSC issued an official statement confirming that it responded to a citizen report during the morning of August 29, 2026, regarding the banner containing alleged threats.
The agency reported that security personnel removed the material and referred the case to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Campeche for the corresponding investigation.
The SPSC also stated that it continues to conduct surveillance operations in the area and urged citizens to avoid sharing unconfirmed information.
