Campeche Security Strategy Under Scrutiny Amid Claims of Government Inaction
The security strategy in the state of Campeche is under intense scrutiny. Various sectors of citizens and lawmakers have pointed to an alleged omission by Governor Layda Sansores, whom they accuse of failing to contain the violence affecting the state, particularly in the municipality of Carmen.
Ciudad del Carmen has become the most violent and unsafe municipality in Campeche, concentrating the highest incidence of high-impact crimes and intentional homicides. Despite the state government’s efforts to project an image of stability, the operational reality contradicts these efforts: rates of property crimes and homicide-related violence far exceed those of the rest of the region, turning the southern area into a priority red flag.
Criticism regarding the alleged government inaction is based on an alarming statistical disparity. While the state administration emphasizes figures indicating peace, there is a documented discrepancy between data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) and Inegi. Between 2021 and 2025, the SESNSP reported 389 homicides, while Inegi recorded 446; this difference of 57 executions not formally reported has generated demands for the government to provide transparency regarding the state’s actual situation.
The Sansores administration has been accused of attempting to minimize the security crisis, resorting to dismissive statements such as describing citizen complaints as “fake news from bots” or focusing on blaming previous administrations. This strategy has been rejected by citizens, who are demanding tangible action rather than justifications after nearly 70% of the population has said it feels unsafe.
