The Sinaloa Cartel is not only facing internal fragmentation that has caused an intense wave of violence in its main stronghold. In Durango, one of its main areas of operation, the criminal organization is making efforts to prevent the entry of another criminal group into the territory: the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).
During the last month, the most notorious factions of the also known Pacific Cartel – Los Chapitos and La Mayiza – have been involved in an intense confrontation that has not only caused dozens of deaths and devastation in Culiacán, but also a large investment of time and money by both criminal groups to win the conflict.
However, the most serious thing is happening outside of Sinaloa. The internal war between both factions has put their territorial control in danger, as other criminal groups have decided to take advantage of the situation to try to expand their territories; such is the case of the CJNG.
“The CJNG can take advantage of that division to enter. Tactically, it is more convenient for them to do that; “They are trying to take advantage of the fact that (the Sinaloa Cartel) is divided to gain control of the territories where they had not been able to enter,” said investigative journalist José Reveles.
This is how the CJNG seeks to enter Durango
According to a video spread through social networks, the organization led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias ‘El Mencho’, has begun to enter Durango with the support of “monster” vehicles, very different from those that have normally been seized from them.
Instead of being large vehicles similar to those of the Army or the National Guard (GN), they are armored, tinted trucks, with a large space inside to transport hitmen. The recording, 20 seconds long, also shows a larger and higher cabin.
Reports indicate that these vehicles are being used to confront the Cabrera Sarabia brothers, identified as the main partners of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, in Durango.
Although their main area of operation is the municipality of Canelas and its surroundings, Los Chapitos recently accused them of being responsible for the violence in Zacatecas and some key areas of Sinaloa.
“President. These characters are the cause of all the violence in the state of Durango and Zacatecas, responsible for the murders of innocent people, extortion from sawmills, mines, brothels, cargo trucks, restaurants, piracy, construction companies, etc. Now they want to do the same in the municipality of Mazatlán and Culiacán,” they accused in narcomantas.
Why is the CJNG seeking to enter Durango?
Historically, Durango has been a stronghold for various cartels due to its strategic location that connects with other key trafficking routes in the country, allowing the efficient transportation of narcotics to the United States, one of the main consumer markets. Its proximity to Sinaloa, the birthplace of the Sinaloa Cartel, has significantly influenced the dynamics of drug trafficking in the region.
In economic terms, Durango has experienced development problems and poverty in several rural areas, which has led some sectors of the population to see drug trafficking as a viable alternative for obtaining income. This, combined with the limited presence of the State in certain remote locations, has facilitated the establishment and operation of criminal groups.
These factors make Durango a relevant epicenter within the panorama of drug trafficking in Mexico, impacting local and national security and development.
