The Diocese of Colima will host the National Meeting for the Day of the Layman 2024

The Diocese of Colima will host the National Meeting for the Day of the Layman 2024, which will be held at the Casino de la Feria de Colima starting at 8 a.m. This was announced by Asahel Ochoa Madrigal, priest, at a press conference.

Ochoa Madrigal stressed that this event seeks to recognize and value the presence of the laity in the life and mission of the Church. Accompanied by Pedro Covarrubias, secretary of the Area of Testimony in the Pastoral of the Diocese of Colima, and by Nahomi Meza, representative of the Youth Ministry, he reported that the attendance of approximately 4 thousand people from states such as Zacatecas, Durango, Tabasco, Michoacán, Jalisco, State of Mexico and Colima is expected.

The meeting is organized with the support of the Episcopal Dimension for the Laity, the Commission of Lay Organizations of Colima and the collaboration of volunteers from different groups and movements, as well as religious men and women and priests.

Registration to participate in the event is open and can be done at the parish offices of each community. Likewise, an invitation was extended to the activities that will take place in the parishes of the Diocese starting on Sunday, November 17, which will include conferences, parish assemblies, days of prayer and moments of coexistence.

Ochoa Madrigal recalled that the celebration of the Day of the Layman in Mexico began in 2018 when, during the Plenary Assembly of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, it was voted unanimously to declare Blessed Anacleto González Flores as patron of the laity and to institute the third weekend of November, on the feast of Christ the King of the Universe, as the National Day of the Layman. Since November 2019, this celebration has been held annually, being the first large-scale event in Guanajuato Bicentennial Park.

The activities scheduled for November 23 will include moments of animation, prayer, exposition and testimonies on the ways in which the laity can participate in the life of the Church, contribute to the construction of society and assume community responsibility. The history of faith and tradition of Colima will also be highlighted.

For his part, Pedro Covarrubias explained that a lay person is a baptized person who, through the sacrament of baptism, has understood his vocation and makes the gospel present in his daily life and in the realities that surround him.
