Massacre in Querétaro: armed men kill five people in a home in El Marqués

On October 9, Querétaro woke up to an act of violence that shocked the population in the municipality of El Marqués, as the murder of five people was recorded inside a home.

According to the official report of the Municipal Public Security and Transit Secretariat, it was after five in the morning when a call to the emergency number 911 alerted the authorities about the gunshots in the community of Jesús María.

When the request for support was channeled by the corporation, municipal elements went to the aforementioned home, where they found five adults —four women and one man— with no vital signs.

The first investigations detail that during the early morning, two armed subjects broke into the home and shot directly at the victims. Later, the aggressors fled on foot in different directions, “leaving behind a van that has been secured at the scene of the events.”

Municipal Police officers gathered preliminary information on the appearance of the attackers and began a pursuit in the area, for which they requested the support of security corporations from neighboring municipalities.

Likewise, the agency provided the corresponding report to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) for the collection of the necessary evidence, which will be integrated into the corresponding investigation file.

As of the time of this edition, the Attorney General’s Office has not issued any statement regarding this case. Likewise, the identities of the victims are unknown, as well as the possible motive for the multiple homicide.

Querétaro, one of the states with the lowest homicide rate
According to the reports shared daily by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), currently headed by Omar García Harfuch, Querétaro had not registered any homicide case between October 1 and 8.

The entity was positioned among the territories with a lower homicide rate during the last six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

According to a graph presented by García Harfuch on October 8, Querétaro recorded a total of 1,306 intentional homicides between January 2018 and September 2024. The rate of this crime per 100,000 inhabitants was 7.62, while the national average was 26.6.

Likewise, with regard to absolute figures, the SSPC report shows that 133 intentional homicides were committed in Querétaro between January and September 2024. The figure recorded in this entity exceeded the numbers in Nayarit (119), Tlaxcala (105), Aguascalientes (96), Coahuila de Zaragoza (76), Campeche (68), Durango (53), Baja California Sur (49) and Yucatán (32).
