Landfill and cable car, projects that “got out of hand”: Mayor of Mazatlán

Two projects of enormous importance for the people of Mazatlán were not completed by Mayor Edgar González Zataráin. And although the steps taken seemed firm, they were not enough for the creation of a sanitary landfill and a cable car as urban transport.

With less than 20 days to go before the end of his administration, which began on October 26, 2022 and will close on October 31, the municipal president explained what truncated these projects for the benefit of health and the environment, and urban mobility in Mazatlán.

He said that what hindered the new sanitary landfill was the rejection of the population of communities such as El Habal and Miravalles, where its installation was planned, in addition to the delay in the feasibility by Sebides, to build it within the land of the municipal dump.

“Just the day before yesterday they gave us the final resolution from Sebides, where they gave us the feasibility to build it there (on the same land as the dump), just the day before yesterday. We couldn’t do it before either because we didn’t even have the feasibility, we already have it and now that we already have the feasibility, there’s no time left, so we’re leaving. But we left everything ready for the next administration.”

The other project that he would have liked to start is the cable car as urban transport. He pointed out that from the beginning this was planned for the mobility of Mazatlan residents and not as a tourist attraction, and although its construction was “just around the corner,” it was not established.

He added that starting it would have been irresponsible within his administration due to the lack of time, despite the pre-studies that were done regarding its feasibility. However, he added that the project is in the hands of the governor.

“The State Government already has it, the governor already has it, both the one from Culiacán and Mazatlán, because the governor also attracted the project for Culiacán, so, both are brought by the governor.”

He explained that the cable car project requires the approval of Rubén Rocha Moya because the construction of this means of transport has two schemes: the State Government’s own investment or the private investment with a subsidy from the State in the ticketing.

“So it must be taken into account that it will start from scratch. The governor already has all the information, he already has all the advances so that at the appropriate time, if it is considered so, he decides.”
