Canaco Servytur Tulum Chetumal Demands Order in Demonstrations and Road Blocks

Amir Padilla Espadas, president of Canaco Servytur Tulum Chetumal, spoke out about recent road blocks at the entrance to the capital, expressing concern about the impact of these demonstrations on citizens and vehicular traffic.

The business leader acknowledged the receptivity of the state government, led by Governor Mara Lezama, towards social demands, but highlighted the importance of presenting these concerns through appropriate channels without affecting third parties.

Padilla Espadas noted that in recent months, road blocks have been a constant feature in the region, leading to growing discontent among drivers.

“It is natural for drivers to get frustrated, regardless of the reasons why people are demonstrating,” he said.

Despite his support for freedom of expression, the business leader believes the situation has reached a critical point.

“Road blockages have gotten out of control, so we need order and, of course, for authorities to attend to the demands of society,” he commented.

Authority Management

Padilla Espadas also highlighted the work of Secretary General Cristina Torres, who has responded to these incidents by managing solutions with various institutions, such as the Federal Electricity Commission and the Potable Water and Sewerage Commission. However, he lamented that sometimes the frustration of some protesters leads to unnecessary verbal and physical confrontations.

In a press conference in Cancun, members of the collective Memoria, Verdad y Justicia (Memory, Truth, and Justice) announced that they will take legal action against state and municipal police officers, as well as high-ranking officials who allegedly participated in violent repression during a peaceful demonstration in Chetumal.

Romana Rivera Ramírez, president of the collective, expressed her outrage, saying that more than 24 hours after the incident, state authorities have not approached the victims to explain what happened.

“What matters less is how severe those injuries were,” she claimed.

The activist described the acts of repression as intolerable and compared the behavior of some public officials to “those of criminals”, noting that they caused physical harm to ten people who simply demanded their right to search for their family members.

“We ask that these facts be clarified and that heads roll where necessary,” she stated, highlighting that they have videos and photographs documenting what happened.
