CHIAPAS, Second Place in Human Rights Violations Cases

Chiapas ranks second nationally with the highest number of registered cases of alleged Human Rights (HR) violations from January to August 2024.

During this period, Chiapas recorded 725 cases. According to the National Human Rights Violation Alert System, Tapachula, Villa Comaltitlán, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez account for the majority of registered and concluded cases.

In this scenario, Tapachula leads the alleged HR violations with a total of 389 registered cases, of which 258 have been concluded.

It is followed by Villa Comaltitlán with 137 open cases and 90 concluded. In the capital, 28 cases have been concluded out of 69 opened, and in San Cristobal de Las Casas, 37 cases have been opened and 28 concluded.

The Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) is the federal institution in Chiapas that leads the investigations, with 286 open cases, mostly in Tapachula. The most recurrent violation involves actions and omissions that infringe on the rights of migrants and their families.

For the same type of violation, the National Institute of Migration (INM) ranks second among institutions with the most registered cases, accumulating 183, of which 114 have been resolved.

The third place is held by the Decentralized Administrative Bodies for Prevention and Social Rehabilitation, a federal agency that controls the federal prisons in Chiapas, with 153 registered cases, 152 of which were in Villa Comaltitlán.

From this information, it is evident that the most recurrent violation was the failure to provide medical care to inmates.
