Through a video posted on digital platforms, alleged members of the Cartel del Noreste (CDN) reiterated their presence in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Nuevo León, and launched threats against criminal organizations that call themselves independent.
Six heavily armed and hooded men —five of them in military uniform— appear standing in a room. In front of them are three people tied up, with their faces covered and with visible signs of violence.
“Cartel del Noreste, we are going for all of Los Costales, the entire Metropolitan Area is ours, this is Operation La Silla,” shouts the spokesman for the group of hitmen —the only one not wearing camouflage clothing— at the beginning of the recording.
Los Costales is the name by which an independent criminal group that operates in the city of Monterrey has been identified. It is presumed that one of its main strongholds would be the area corresponding to the Colonia Industrial, but there are no official reports that allow us to know more details about its structure.
“This is how it will end for all those who work with them,” says the leader of the group while hitting two of the subdued people with his rifle. The third remains motionless, lying on the ground, throughout the video.
“We are coming for you ‘Steven’, we are coming for ‘Costal’, for ‘Edson’, for ‘El R1’, for ‘El 01’, for ‘Negro’, we are coming for the entire Plaza de la Silla,” he is heard saying towards the end of the threat, in reference to what could be the identities of alleged leaders of Los Costales, whose real names are unknown.
“This is the Cartel del Noreste,” the messenger reaffirms towards the end of the material, to which one of his companions adds “The one from Los Chukys!”
The self-assigned name of the CDN’s La Silla Operation presumably refers to a cell of this criminal organization with operations in the Cerro de la Silla region, which includes the municipalities of Monterrey, Guadalupe and Juárez Nuevo León.
The same branch of the cartel had already issued intimidating messages against independent groups in the center of the state. On September 25, several narco-banners with their signature were found, which read: “Operation La Silla CDN. We are already in the center and the entire metropolitan area, we are going for the sacks and the people of 01 […] Independents from Alinense or ALV who have already started the war. Att: Cartel del Noreste (sic.)”.
Regarding the nickname Los Chukys, it is how one of the armed wings of the Northeast Cartel is known, which is derived from a faction known as Operativa Coahuila, Operativa 35 or 35 Battalion, which at the beginning of 2023 began its advance with the intention of establishing itself in the heart of Nuevo León.
