This will be the maximum speed of the Mexico-Querétaro Train: travel time will be 40% less than on the road

Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, presented the plan for the Mexico-Querétaro Train, committing to finishing it within three years, that is, in 2027, which will later have extensions to Guadalajara, Monterrey and Laredo.

The Mexico-Querétaro Train project not only seeks to improve connectivity between two of the most important cities in the country, but also to boost the economic development of Querétaro, as she highlighted the importance of the state’s good connection, which makes it a strategic point for transportation.

It is estimated that the travel time between Mexico City and Querétaro will be approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, which represents a time saving of 40%. The trains will have a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour and capacity for 450 passengers.

The departure from Mexico City will be from Buenavista, passing through the municipality of San Juan del Río until reaching the capital of Querétaro.

This project is the start of a broader plan that includes the construction of more than 3,000 kilometers of passenger railways during her term.

The train route will eventually be extended to Guadalajara, and two additional tracks are planned from Querétaro to the north, one to Nuevo Laredo and another to Nogales. This project, which has been under discussion for several years, seeks to offer a faster and more efficient transportation alternative.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that new tracks will be created exclusively for passenger transport, while maintaining the current ones for freight trains.

Who will build the Mexico-Querétaro Train and when will it be ready? The development of the train will be carried out by the Felipe Ángeles engineering group, belonging to the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), with the goal of finishing in 2027.

According to Sheinbaum, military engineers have demonstrated their capacity in previous projects, which guarantees the quality of the work.

The president explained that, although the preliminary works began two months ago, the studies necessary for the execution of the project will extend until April 2025, when construction will begin.

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport will be in charge of coordinating the project, while military engineers will be in charge of construction. In addition, an agreement was signed with the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) to evaluate and mitigate the environmental impact of the train.

The Government of the State of Querétaro will collaborate in the opening of the rights of way and will provide the necessary resources for the project. Sheinbaum explained that, although the project is complex, it will be achieved within the established time frame thanks to an efficient work scheme that has already begun.

From October to April 2025, various studies will be carried out along the planned route, using new mapping technologies to facilitate the layout of the tracks.

This transport and connection project, which had been proposed by the previous government, seeks to bring development, employment and opportunities to families in the states that the train will pass through.
