Historic Burger Restaurant in CDMX Saying Goodbye

Opened in 1972, the American-style fast food restaurant announced its closure, causing surprise and nostalgia among the residents of Mexico City.

An iconic burger joint in Mexico City has recently announced the end of its operations; its imminent closure has generated lamentations on social media in recent hours. This is Mr. Kelly’s, a business considered one of the oldest in its field in the capital, now living its final hours.

On the facade of the establishment located at Avenida Insurgentes Sur 337, Hipódromo Condesa neighborhood, a large banner has been placed announcing the end of an era in “cult” Chilango gastronomy:

“We are leaving, thank you. Mr. Kelly’s. The classics of Condesa,” it reads without adding further information.

The closure of this old fast food restaurant, faithfully prepared in the American style, where classic hamburgers, French fries, and milkshakes have been served since 1972, has caused reactions of surprise and anticipated melancholy.

“I don’t know how I’m going to recover from this. Mr. Kelly’s, I’m going to miss you,” “Mr. Kelly’s is closing, I’m devastated,” “After more than 50 years, Mr. Kelly’s says goodbye,” “In my student days, Mr. Kelly’s saved me on several occasions. RIP,” can be read on X.

It is worth noting that the restaurant’s social media, which opened its doors on December 27, 1972, has not shared any information about it; even their recent posts still promote their specialties, such as the Mr. Classic combo, available for $165 pesos, and Mr. BBQ, for $170 pesos.

It is expected that in the coming days, and given the noise the closure is generating among Mr. Kelly’s regular customers, the company will provide a reason that satisfies its nostalgic diners.

Infobae México sought to contact those responsible for the historic restaurant; however, at the time of publishing this note, there is still no response regarding the announced closure of the Cuauhtémoc branch, the only survivor of the Mexican chain’s openings in the seventies and eighties on Avenida Universidad and in Tecamachalco, Naucalpan, State of Mexico.

However, X user César Galván (@CesarChico_mc) posted the supposed final date of the retro Chilango paradise: “Mr. Kelly’s says goodbye, closing its doors on November 17, 2024.” Once this information is officially confirmed, this news note will be updated.

In addition to its delights, such as double cheese, bacon, ham-stuffed, or roast beef burgers, and its condiment bar offering everything from pickled cucumber sauce to grilled chilies, the nostalgia of the past is one of Mr. Kelly’s keys, especially among those who enjoy its “seventies” aesthetic, where the classic sign “Welcome! It’s a pleasure to see you again,” present for decades at the location near the corner of Insurgentes and Sonora avenues, is about to be removed.
