Mexico: Canadian Tourism Grows More Than American Tourism

On average, 725 American visitors arrive in Cancun every hour, solidifying this tourist destination as the favorite for the North American market; Los Cabos follows with 253 people per hour, according to the latest report for January-July of this year, prepared by the National System of Statistical Information of the Tourism Sector of Mexico (Datatur).

In the first months of this year, 3,654,779 visitors arrived in Cancun by air, positioning it in first place, while Los Cabos received 1,279,622 passengers from the United States, according to the Tourism Activity Results (RAT) as of last July, generated by the federal Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).

Nationally, 8,922,000 tourists with American citizenship arrived by air, an increase of 5.8 percent compared to the same period in 2023. As for Canadians, the second-largest market of foreign visitors, 1,695,000 passengers were recorded, presenting an increase of 9.7 percent; most of them arrived at the airports of Cancun, with 991,650 passengers, and Puerto Vallarta, with 313,351.

The airports that received the highest number of international tourists in Mexico during this period were Cancun, Mexico City, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Monterrey, Cozumel, and Silao, which represented 92.5 percent of the total arrivals of foreign travelers.

In the case of cruise visitors, Quintana Roo also leads; the ports that received the most foreign tourists were Cozumel and Mahahual, in this state, with 2.8 and 1.2 million respectively; and in third place, the port of Ensenada, Baja California, with 577,000 visitors.

As reported by REPORTUR.mx, according to data analysis from the Gemes Report, Mexico has experienced a significant and widespread decline in air tourists, as eight of its ten major emitters have reduced their number of travelers. (Concern in Mexico over declining travelers from 8 of the 10 major emitters).

The August report highlighted that countries like the United States, the main market for the country, had a year-on-year reduction in visitors of 0.5%; while in the following countries, such as Canada, the decrease was 0.6%; in Colombia, 17.1%, and in the United Kingdom, 14.1%. Alongside them, other countries like Brazil and Ecuador, which require visas, also experienced significant declines.
