Teachers in Chiapas Have Been Earning Less Than Half Their Salary for 11 Years

At least 2,000 teachers at the Technical Secondary level from different regions of the state have been earning half their salary for 11 years due to various anomalies committed by state and federal educational authorities.

Alejandro Ovando Rodríguez, representative of the Academy in Resistance of the Technical Secondary Level, pointed out that this situation has resulted in an estimated debt of 180 million pesos.

During a protest held in downtown Tuxtla Gutiérrez, they reported that the problem is so severe that 50 percent of the teachers in the 158 schools at this level are affected by this situation.

He emphasized: “There is a problem in the subject of Technologies, with the assignment of codes, that since 2011 teachers work eight hours but get paid for three, a situation that has been ongoing for many years.”

They lamented that this situation was endorsed at the time by the secretary of Section 7 of the CNTE-SNTE, Pedro Gómez Bahamaca.

He added: “This problem has been escalated to different levels, it has even been reported in the ‘mañanera’ to former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.”

The teachers announced that their next action will depend on the response given by the authorities this Monday, following a meeting with officials from the Secretariat of Education, who have repeatedly failed to provide a solution.

They specified that the teachers will analyze the situation to take concrete actions such as a work stoppage or road blockades.
