125 people had to be hospitalized after a case of clenbuterol poisoning; municipal and health authorities banned the consumption of beef.

In the municipality of Tolimán, Querétaro, municipal and health authorities temporarily banned the consumption of beef due to a mass poisoning problem that left at least 125 hospitalized.

According to the social media posts of the municipal president of Tolimán, Querétaro, Alejo Sánchez de Santiago, the problem was reported during the afternoon and evening of Sunday, October 13.

The mayor detailed that by around 8:30 PM on Sunday, the Health Center was already overwhelmed, as 125 people were admitted as emergencies due to poisoning after consuming contaminated beef.

By midnight, Sánchez de Santiago reported, most of the patients were stabilized. Among the cases was a pregnant woman who had a premature birth.

After the cases were confirmed, the State Health Department, led by Martina Pérez Rendón, mobilized to provide support and issued a statement asking the population not to consume beef purchased at the municipal market.

They also recommended that citizens who have consumed beef go to the Health Center if they experience the following symptoms:

– Headache

– Dizziness

– Nausea or vomiting

– Palpitations

– Difficulty breathing

So far, it is unknown where the meat contamination originated, but the municipal president indicated that health authorities are investigating a specific establishment in the municipal market.

“Health is in charge of the investigation, but for now, we have asked that beef not be consumed,” he commented.
