The state of Oaxaca has managed to place sixth in the National Ranking of Public Transport for Mexican Cities 2024, highlighting its performance in three of the seven indicators evaluated in this study, which analyzes the progress of urban mobility in Mexico.

The ranking was prepared by the Mario Molina Center, an institution recognized for its more than 20 years of experience in the evaluation and regulation of mobility systems, in collaboration with the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) in Mexico. This classification aims to measure the professionalization of public transport in the main cities of the country, focusing on aspects such as accessibility, sustainability and institutional management.

Oaxaca stands out in mobility and accessibility

The Oaxaca Mobility Secretariat (Semovi) reported that the state has stood out in the accessibility, sustainability and institutionality indicators, obtaining a score above the average among the 11 cities evaluated within the basic public transport category, which groups those with less than 900 thousand inhabitants.

The study focuses on a total of 32 Mexican cities, one for each federal entity, and is divided into two categories: cities with basic public transport and cities that are already moving towards the professionalization of the service. In the first category, where Oaxaca competes, the delegated operation of transport is evaluated through concessions to individuals or corporations. Meanwhile, the second category groups cities with a population of more than 900 thousand inhabitants, with transport systems organized, regulated and managed in a more professional manner.

Citybus: the next step towards efficient public transport

One of the main projects that the Ministry of Mobility is working on is the consolidation of Citybus, a system that is expected to significantly improve the quality of public transport in Oaxaca. This advance seeks to strengthen the transport infrastructure, improving both urban mobility and the quality of life of users.

The ranking evaluates seven key areas: accessibility, digitalization, efficiency, equity, safety and travel experience, sustainability, and institutional management. Oaxaca has been well evaluated in most of these areas, with special mention given to its progress in accessibility and sustainability.

Oaxaca, on the way to a more connected and equitable mobility

With its sixth position in the ranking, Oaxaca is above the average of the 11 cities in the basic transportation category. This achievement represents a boost to continue improving and moving towards a more efficient and equitable mobility. The Ministry of Mobility has indicated that this recognition is a catalyst to undertake new actions that will lead the entity to be a reference in sustainable mobility in the future.

Programs such as “In Oaxaca we move safely”, “Safe Transportation in Oaxaca”, “Women moving Oaxaca” and “Regla el Transporte se Arregla” will continue to be part of the efforts to optimize public transportation in the capital and other regions of the state.
