The tourism sector in Puerto Vallarta has gone through a very complicated summer 2024 and early fall period in economic terms – as they have not suffered for at least a decade – but they already see the light at the end of the tunnel with what they hope will be a good high season starting the second week of November.
The different unions that make up the activity of serving tourists have suffered in recent weeks low hotel occupancy rates, less than 60 percent, which has directly affected restaurateurs and service providers in general.
In the case of the restaurant sector, the crisis has been severe for the vast majority of establishments, with the return of the ups and downs of tourist activity and a drastic drop in sales from July to date, that is, during the summer of 2024; however, they expect a rebound starting next month and that the winter period will be very productive, commented chef Thierry Blouet.
“This summer has been very, very difficult, like we haven’t had in 10 or 15 years, with a drop in sales and having to pay our commitments without laying off people, so we hope that things will start to improve in November with a good season.”
The chef, who is French but has lived in the city for three decades, commented that events such as the upcoming International Gourmet Festival, from November 7 to 17; the 68th International Marlin and Tuna Fishing Tournament from November 13 to 16; the beginning of the Camino del Arte gallery tour, Art Walk starting on October 30, to mention a few events, are the launch of what should be a great high season.
We must evaluate, commented the businessman, how to attract different tourists during the summer period, how to attract more North Americans – although it is not the best climate – but with creativity, with more events, with greater promotion, it can be achieved.
However, Blouet added, it is important not to fall into the siren song of lowering prices to attract more tourists:
