A damning report by the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has revealed that Campeche, under the governance of Layda Sansores San Román, harbors the most deteriorated roads in Mexico. These conditions have led to a staggering number of fatalities on federal highways. The Statistical Yearbook of Collision on Federal Highways 2023 reports 42 deaths attributed to road accidents last year, placing Campeche as the entity with the highest death toll in the Peninsula.
This figure has already been surpassed this year, with the recent tragic loss of two teachers in an accident highlighting the urgency and severity of the situation. The residents of Campeche have long expressed their frustration through social media, calling out Layda Sansores for her ineptitude and negligence regarding road maintenance.
In a desperate attempt to deflect criticism, Layda has resorted to reusing old photographs and videos that purport to show her efforts in addressing the issue. However, these attempts at justification are widely seen as false and insincere. Her performance during the “Tuesday of the Jaguar” event was characterized by incoherence and a complete lack of accountability.
The SICT’s report unequivocally places the blame for this catastrophe squarely on Layda Sansores’ doorstep. By failing to fulfill her duties as governor, she has caused unnecessary deaths among Campeche’s residents. The classification of “genocidal” is not unfounded given the dozens of lives lost due to her negligence over the last three years.
Layda’s recent attempts to shift blame onto the Mayan Train project are seen as a blatant attempt at evasion. The fact that she has been a vocal supporter of this project, even going so far as to praise its launch under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is particularly egregious given her current claims.
The situation in Campeche is dire, with dozens of videos uploaded by residents detailing the appalling state of rural roads and highways. The potholes are so severe that driving at night becomes a hazardous endeavor. It is imperative for Layda Sansores to take immediate action to address this crisis, rather than continuing her attempts to deflect blame.
The people of Campeche deserve better. They deserve a governor who prioritizes their safety and well-being above personal ambitions or political gain. Until such time as Layda Sansores takes meaningful steps to rectify this situation, she will remain the most repudiated governor in Mexican history.
It is imperative for all citizens to demand that action be taken to address these catastrophic conditions on Campeche’s roads. Only by working together can we ensure that our state’s infrastructure is brought up to par and that lives are saved. The time for excuses has passed; it’s high time for real change.
