After two days of blocking the passage of trucks with wood from the Sierra de Mezquital to Durango capital and other destinations, community members who are against excessive logging are reporting that they have already received threats and fear for their lives.
The blockade began last Friday, October 25 in the afternoon, at the entrance to La Guajolota, after they began to see trucks and cranes arriving that are used to remove the wood, so they organized to not let these units pass.
With day and night guards, different families began to join together, some from nearby annexes, with the idea of not allowing this arbitrariness.
Months ago they had already stopped the passage of trucks, also with blockades.
The inhabitants consider that what they intend to do with the wood is a “robbery and abuse”, since they are not thinking about what it can cause in the future due to excessive logging, and the damage not only to the environment but to new generations.
They say that the lifting of the forest ban was an agreement between authorities and some residents, without taking into account all the voices, especially those who were against it.
They point out that there are people who accepted that the Forest Harvesting be done, for personal economic interest, not the benefit for the community.
PROTECTION
The people who did not agree and maintain their position of not allowing the logging, are those who have organized themselves, but they are also those who are fearing for their lives, since there are higher interests and many people involved who want to take the wood.
Although they asked for support from the security authorities so that they would arrive and not generate a confrontation, they did arrive but to break the blockade, open the way for the trucks loaded with the logs and escort them.
Finally, some loaded trucks have already left. The community members of the blockade request all the support that can be given to them, since they have been directly threatened with death.
