A local security official and a former mayor of Mexico were shot dead yesterday in two separate events in Michoacán, one of the most violent in the country where several criminal organizations are fighting for control of the territory.
The director of Public Security of the municipality of Angamacutiro, Lizbeth Romero Tafolla, died after being shot in her home, the Michoacán Prosecutor’s Office reported without offering further details.
According to local media, armed people showed up at the official’s home and fired several shots when the woman opened the door of the house.

Yesterday, the murder of Aurelio Santos, former mayor of the municipality of Cotija, who was shot in the vicinity of the Colegio de Bachilleres in that town, was also recorded, confirmed the state prosecutor’s office.
The body of Santos, who did not get re-election for the mayor of Cotija in the last regional elections, was found on the side of a street.
In the middle of this year, the mayor of Cotija, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, was shot dead. Michoacán is one of the most violent states in Mexico and is the scene of a struggle between several cartels and criminal groups for control of the territory.
